✈Ming Chuan University Department of Commercial Design – Korea Overseas Study Program✈
During this overseas study program in South Korea, students from the Department of Commercial Design at Ming Chuan University participated in a design workshop hosted by the Department of Visual Design at Induk University.
During the event, President Chun-Ran Park shared inspiring insights on design education and international collaboration between Taiwan and South Korea. The workshop was led by Professor Lee, Min Hyoung and Professor Dong-Jun Oh, who guided students from both universities through a series of collaborative design activities and cultural exchanges.
Professor Dong-Jun Oh introduced the theme of Typography Design, explaining the visual differences between Chinese characters and the Korean writing system (Hangul). While Chinese characters convey meaning through their semantic structure and brushstroke composition, Hangul is constructed from phonetic sounds and geometric forms, representing two distinctly different design logics. Using “one’s name” as the starting point for creation, Professor Oh proposed the idea that “A name is the shortest autobiography.” Centered on the concept of “Name = Identity + Design,” students from Taiwan and South Korea were invited to write their names in Chinese characters, Korean pronunciation, and describe the meaning behind their names before transforming these elements into original typographic designs
Professor Lee, Min Hyoung shared the concept of Invisible Design, introducing topics including thoughtful design, public design, cost-effective design, universal design, service design, and UI/UX design. Through these perspectives, students were encouraged to explore the possibilities of interdisciplinary design in the future. The goal of design, he emphasized, is not merely to create visually appealing works, but to create designs that are meaningful, valuable, and capable of addressing real-world needs.
We would like to express our sincere appreciation to President Chun-Ran Park of Induk University, as well as the faculty members of the Department of Visual Design—Professor Lee, Min Hyoung, Professor Dong-Jun Oh, Professor Kim Young Seok, and Professor Han Na Lee—for their warm hospitality. Their generous support provided an invaluable opportunity for students from Taiwan and South Korea to learn from one another through design practice and cultural exchange.
